Honoring Lan Barnes, US Army, Ret.

Lan Barnes (-2009) was a Software Configuration Management Specialist with extensive field consulting experience. His breadth of knowledge and experience was an inspiration to System Technology Institute’s staff, clients, students and the lives he touched.

He cultivated many students towards SCM Specialist Certification. He had years of hands-on experience in automating and optimizing builds and release processes using traditional and state of the art tool sets; SCM tool administration with branching strategies, user administration and license management; environment control and virtualization; analysis, process documentation, mentoring and training. Mr Barnes worked extensively in government regulated environments (FDA, DoT).

Mr. Barnes worked as a consultant for 10 years specializing in SCM. Clients ranged from manufacturing companies to city and Federal government entities. Assignments ranged from analysis and recommendations to long-term roll-out efforts, from one week to eight months. He was a direct consultant for Intersolv (Merant), the industry leading SCM software product at that time, for TennGroup, a private SCM consultancy firm and had several independent direct contracts.

Lan Barnes was Principal SCM Analyst at Alaris Medical Systems responsible for coordinating and distributing product releases internally, maintaining product compatibility charts, and managing issue tracking database through development, SQE, and audit.

In addition, he was principal member of the Enterprise Process Reengineering SCM Task Working Group. In that capacity, developed a features matrix of all major SCM tools and led the selection committee that selected Perforce to replace PVCS Version Manager.

Mr. Barnes, a Certified Software Quality Engineer (ASQ), a Red Hat Certified Engineer (Red Hat Linux) and processes an Advanced Software Configuration Management Certification (TTC) was an extraordinary team member at STI. He is survived by his wife Janet, his daughter and son and remembered with deep respect by the STI family.
